PEREGRINATION
2013 - CURRENT

PEREGRINATION, first performed at the Art Gallery of Alberta for the 2013 Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art, is a musical journey through deep and affecting sounds coupled with video elements all controlled live from the artist's dias. This improvisational piece transports us through turmoil and grief to a place of contemplation and suspense…

PEREGRINATION is a live cinema work reflecting on the nature of sound and its visual and material nature. A meditation on Joynes' visual experimentation using historical scientific instruments and anachronistic musical technology. PEREGRINATION combines compositional sound elements and improvisational use of recorded footage of live play of the wavedriver machinery he uses to create in the studio.
For PEREGRINATION he brings the early phase of his career in Live Cinema together with his most recent experiments in cymatics by composing and triggering his waveform animations live in concert and accompany these visual sound wave animations with layered vocals and overtone singing. The performance runs through movements of varying intensity rising to a chordal crescendo.

All elements of his Frequency Painting work connect sound and visual definitions of sound. This new work expands these senses with aspects of space and time in his most ambitious Live Cinema work to date. Joynes' explorations and experimentations in art are focused on the active process of listening to, looking at, and feeling sound; slowing down time and linking sensoria to allow for immersion in a whole body experience. PEREGRINATION (Live Cinema) works to offer new opportunities to an audience for the understanding of the importance of deep listening and viewing life, and the wonderful journey that this brings us.

Special thanks to the Alberta Foundation for the Arts for supporting the creation of this work.

On the Other Side Live Cinema

Clinker’s “On the Other Side...” explores Cohen’s continued romance with the light and dark inside our human experience. An audio-visual “deep listening” environment which draws from the vast depths of emotion written into the words and music of Leonard Cohen.

The lush bass tones of Cohen’s voice provide a point of departure for our journey inside Clinker’s cinema of sound and light. Drawing from years of experience in creating and manipulating music and audio, Clinker deconstructs and reassembles Cohen’s voice into surreal “bass-scapes” using his unique and sophisticated system of analogue and digital electronics. Clinker’s creation will bathe the audience in an array of Cohen’s “golden” vocal chords augmented with a connection between sonic and visual details. Specially designed sub-sonic sound frequencies (created from Cohen’s voice itself) reinforce the experience of extreme sound-movement through the body.

On the Other Side... was originally commissioned by the 2008 International Leonard Cohen Festival and appropriates Cohen’s words and bass voice as a departure point into a deep listening audio-visual experience. The piece was also featured at the Banff Centre’s BNMI Interactive Screen 2008 and was considered to be one of the highlights of the 2008 New Media summit.

PROVODY is an emotive journey through five movements of varying intensity that are both kinesthetic and synesthetic agents - an ode to life cycles with a few surprises.

PROVODY - LIVE CINEMA
CLINKER’s Provody began as a commissioned audio piece for Vague Terrain's Digital Arts Journal 2006 feature on Minimalism. In 2007 it evolved into a full Live Cinema with a focus on creating a live synchresis between audio-visual events with no pre-programmed computer or MIDI synching. All A/V “connections” were made possible organically through the use of various layering/phasing/video mixing technics and unique to this piece, vocal microphone “pulses” - which triggered real-time video effects.

Provody is a Ukrainian (Orthodox) ritual for “the blessing of the graves.” I first became aware of this from someone very special to me whose family gathers annually to pray, remember and pay homage to relatives that have passed on. She described her personal experience with this as an emotional journey. I titled my latest work "Provody" because I feel a parallel between this ritual and the flow of emotions... reverie, sadness, loneliness, anger, loss, joy, peace, healing, contentment... one goes through at different stages of one’s life. I feel cleansed after listening to it.

2003

Clinker was officially born with this self-titled Live AV performance created especially for the 2003 MUTEK Festival.

In May 2003 CLINKER made his premiere outside his native Alberta in Montreal, where he shared the stage with two luminaries of ambient drone, Thomas Köner and Asmus Tietchens.

This would turn out to be years before the phrase "Live Cinema" came to describe the art form as it is now defined.

LIVE CINEMA | AV PERFORMANCE - MANDATE

CLINKER’s Live Cinema creates a live synchresis between audio-visual events which reside in the moment. No computer or MIDI synching is used in the genesis of these events.

All A/V “connections” are live and are made possible organically through the use of live layering / phasing / triggering techniques.

Clinker’s interest is focused on the creation of a truly unique experience for each audience member using the brains natural ability to “connect the dots.”

All vocals and harmonies are performed and layered live in concert.

LIVE CINEMA | DEFINITION

The term “Live Cinema“ has hitherto been used primarily to describe the live musical accompaniment of silent movies. But that was yesterday. “Live Cinema“ today stands for the simultaneous creation of sound and image in real time by sonic and visual artists who collaborate to elaborate concepts on equal terms. The traditional parameters of narrative cinema are expanded by a much broader conception of cinematographic space, the focus of which is no longer the photographic construction of reality as seen by the camera’s eye, or linear forms of narration. The term “Cinema” is now to be understood as embracing all forms of configuring moving images, beginning with the animation of painted or synthetic images.
