This work is a stereo edition folded down from an 8-channel immersion composition that accompanies the AV installation Broken Sound by Canadian Visual-Sound artist Gary James Joynes. A similar version was released by the Italian Unexplained Sound Group in their Canada experimental underground 016 survey available here:

CLINKER’s ‘broken sound’ is the most mysterious (and the longest) of all the compositions in this prospection of canadian music. i am trying to find anything musical i know which could resemble or be compared with it, but it is very difficult (so, it is a compliment). it is rare to find this kind of stillness that it is handsome and telluric (opposed to the boring long compositions we are presented frequently). it is easy, on the other side, to imagine angels flying in the skies, if one is given to that kind of flirtations. this synthetic composition constructs itself in line drones of extended variations, easily imperceptible if you are not paying attention (which is one mode of listening to music). i may call this track ‘minimalist’, in the original meaning of the word, and not of the north american music labelling of looped themes. minimal, but nor negligible, at all. maybe economic would be a better word. the synth lines evolve, slowly, unaccompanied, in sound ‘stripes’, until eleven minutes on it changes to another simple ethereal drone, the change is pure sentiment in music, like a vague scent in the air. 15:24 the same happens, only grave and deep, pure floating satisfaction. the above reference to angels was not wrong at all, i know now, as a hum approaches my ears and it could be a flock of them, angels completing this ‘broken sound’, that to me is immersive, contemplative and with the ability to transport the listener to a place far away – or very intimate, inside one’s mind. trans-ambiental electronic-epic masterly work.

Dragon’s Eye Recordings is please to present On the Other Side… (for L. Cohen) by Clinker (Edmonton, AB). On the Other Side… (for L. Cohen) originated as a live cinema performance commissioned by the 2008 Leonard Cohen International Festival in Edmonton, Alberta. With On the Other Side… (for L. Cohen), Clinker explores Cohen’s continued romance with the light and dark inside our human experience. Using the lush bass tones of Cohen’s voice as a point of departure, Clinker deconstructs and reassembles Cohen’s voice into dreamlike soundscapes.
On the Other Side… (for L. Cohen) was created using analog synthesis, processing, and his own voice. Clinker’s vocals have become a major sound source for creating harmonic layers and overtones and was used extensively in this piece. This work continues his interest in meditative spaces and the kinesthetic and synesthetic effects of sound.

Clinker is Alberta’s sound craftsman and graphic artist Gary James Joynes whose latest self-release is packaged beautifully on the out/inside. Dedicated to his dad, the four tracks herein, comprised of approximately a half hour of engaging and cinematic drone (and other things that go bump in the night), is something of a surprise from last year’s self-titled release. Where he’s been pretty icy before, the thaw has mounted and the residual wash of more golden tones ring through the murkier side of Joynes’ aural spectrum. Speaking of music for airports, this is akin to sounds drifting outside an old abandoned rural jet hangar that’s open ended; the siren call of a lost civilization. There is something largely ephemeral here, as the tones develop at a lax and dreamy pace.

On May 4, 2014 Gary James Joynes (aka Wind Rose) curated and hosted a one day festival at dc3 Art Projects to celebrate his release of the WIND ROSE “Lamentations” collaboration with Sean Caulfield. A survey of some of his favorite Edmonton Sound and Noise Artists was presented in an 8.1 channel diffusion audio system. This compilation features the artists in the order the played in the festival recorded live in concert.
ABOUT THIS PROJECT AND SHOW:
As many in the Edmonton art and sound community have known, I have been working on a “NEW” WIND ROSE sound release for over and year and half.
THE SOUND
The sound and music was recorded shortly after the passing of my Father and is is a reflection of the early phase of my grieving process. I imagined 4 phases of his spirit passing over to the other side… each track is an emotional journey revealed as meditative/pulsed sound. I didn’t hold anything back in the creation of these tracks and they are true to the mandate of my WIND ROSE project which explores layered and pulsed sound and noise using repetition and micro tweaking/layering techniques of only analog oscillators. The instrument used is a wonderfully broken vintage Minimoog and a 70’s analog delay box.
THE ART
I have been a massive admirer of the artwork of SEAN CAULFIELD for many years. I approached him about collaborating on this release and responding to the sound work with one of his amazingly detailed drawings. He offered to do an original Mezzotint with the only stipulation that it would take a long time to create. I didn’t care in the least about the time as I knew the wait would be worth it completely. The art was completed in early 2014 and printed by New Leaf in Vancouver in an edition of 100.
We spent months lovingly hand creating the packaging and I am thrilled with the end product which was released by the Edmonton Label Amusements Banales on May 4th, 2014.
THE CONCERT
The show was presented in the incredible art space of dc3 Art Projects, with a immersive sound space delivered via a fantastic 8.1 Surround PA System. After securing the space and sound system, it only made sense to SHARE all of this with some of my favorite local sound artists. The artists I have selected to play each bring an incredible amount of talent and passion to their work, and had up to 20 minutes to take us into unique and wonderful (some intense) sound spaces!

CLINKER + MANRAYGUN | DUE SOUTH… (TOWARDS IRRICANA) | 2011
(Acme to Irricana – Remix) for iHuman “Feedback” Project
In early 2011 Clinker was invited to contribute a sound piece for the iHuman “Feedback” inner-city youth project, a remix inititaive founded by alt-country-folk-rock band manraygun. Arists were asked to select a song from the album “Everything is Temporaray” with all proceeds from a limited edition vinyl release and charity concert going to support inner city youth at risk with arts programming. Clinker’s selection, “Acme to Irricana,” ventured well off of secondaray highway #9’s original trajectory, deep into the vast rolling prairies of his native Alberta. The rich instrumental pallete of manraygun was reconfigured into an imagined landscape of golden wheat and vivid yellow canola(sound) fields… Due South… towards Irricana.
