CLINKER
GARY JAMES JOYNES is a dedicated audio and visual artist, composer/musician/vocalist,
and sound designer. He is fascinated by the sources of electronic composition
and the ever-evolving language of technology; objects and mechanisms stimulate
his process. As CLINKER, his work explores meditative spaces and the kinesthetic
and synesthetic effects of sound and visuals.
Recent work includes "On the Other Side..." a Live Cinema piece
commissioned by the 2008 INTERNATIONAL LEONARD COHEN FESTIVAL. A film
score for the NATIONAL FILM BOARD OF CANADA'S feature full-length documentary
“DIRT" was also composed by Clinker and was premiered at the
Vancouver DOXA Festival in May 2008. His 2007 Live Cinema performance
work "PROVODY" toured Canada and was selected to open the 8th.
MUTEK FESTIVAL in Montreal. In 2006 music composition, sound/video design
and live performance was commissioned for ISABELLE ROUSSEAU’S “BRONZE
AGE” AV Project presented at EXPANSE ‘06. A video piece for
ASMUS TEITCHENS “Teilmenge 24” was released on TJ NORRIS’s
“TRIMIX” CD/DVD compilation (INNOVA Recordings 2007).
A forthcoming full-length audio work will be released on Seattle's Dragon's
Eye Recordings in Nov/Dec 2008. A future collaboration with contemporary
dancer/choreographer Christina Medina (@tendance, Austria) is also planned
for 2009.
Recent performances include the BANFF CENTER'S BNMI INTERACTIVE SCREEN
(2008 & 2007 editions), The 2008 LEONARD COHEN INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL,
NEW FORMS FESTIVAL 2007 (Vancouver), opening the 2007 MUTEK FESTIVAL (8th.
Edition - Montreal), ELECTROLL’S 1 & 2 (Edmonton), the SEA OF
SOUND FESTIVAL 2005 (The Works - Edmonton), and the MUTEK Le PLACARD FESTIVAL
in June 2005 (Montreal).
The last few years have seen Clinker’s work performed and exhibited
in Canada and abroad in festivals including TANZSTARTKLAR FESTIVAL 2008
(Graz, Austria), SPRAWL - INTERPLAY_4 FESTIVAL 2007 (Amsterdam, Dublin,
London, Bristol), STANDART 2003 (Madrid, Spain), the NEW FORMS FESTIVAL
2003 (Vancouver). In May 2003 CLINKER made his premiere outside his native
Alberta at the 2003 MUTEK Festival, where he shared the stage with two
luminaries of ambient drone, Thomas Köner and Asmus Tietchens.
